Overview of ABB FPNO-21 PROFINET Adapter

The FPNO-21 is a PROFINET IO adapter module designed for ABB drives (e.g., ACS880, ACS580) to enable real-time industrial Ethernet communication. It replaces older FENA-x1 modules and supports PROFIdrive for seamless integration with PLCs like Siemens S7-300/1500 .

3. Step-by-Step Connection & Configuration

(1) Install the FPNO-21 Module

• Mount the FPNO-21 into the drive’s option slot (e.g., ACS880) .

• Ensure firmware ≥1.10.0.0 (supports simulation mode for backward compatibility) .

(2) Configure the Drive Parameters

(3) Install GSDML File in PLC

• Download the FPNO-21 GSDML file from ABB’s website or included resources .

• In TIA Portal (Siemens):

  • Go to Options → Manage GSD files

  • Import GSDML-V2.x-ABB-FPNO-21.xml 

  • Restart the software.

(4) Configure PROFINET Network

1. Assign IP & Device Name

   • Set FPNO-21 IP (e.g., 192.168.0.2) and subnet mask (255.255.255.0) .

   • Assign a PROFINET device name (e.g., ABB_DRIVE1).

2. Map I/O Signals

   • Define input/output bytes (e.g., 8 bytes for 64 digital signals) .

   • Match PLC addresses with drive signals (e.g., Q256.0 ↔ DO0).

3. Establish Communication

   • Drag a connection between the PLC’s PROFINET port and FPNO-21 in TIA Portal .
