The ICSI08E3 is a remote I/O slave unit within the Procontic CS31 system, used to gather digital (binary / discrete) input signals — such as switch contacts, relays, sensors, device ON/OFF states — from field devices. The collected signals are transmitted over the CS31 bus (RS-485) to the central controller, enabling remote I/O architecture and distributed signal acquisition.
It can be combined with other I/O modules (digital, analog, mixed) on the same CS31 bus, offering flexible and scalable I/O configuration.
| Parameter / Feature | Description / Detail |
|---|---|
| Module Type | Remote I/O Unit (Digital / Binary Input) |
| Signal Type | Digital (binary / discrete) input / I/O |
| Input Voltage / Signal | Typical variant operates at 120 VAC for binary inputs (AC) |
| Communication | CS31 bus (RS-485 twisted-pair serial communication) |
| Expandability | Up to 31 remote I/O units (slave units) can be connected on one CS31 bus |
| Mounting / Installation | Plug-in module on dedicated base; base compatible with DIN-rail or screw/panel mounting (depending on base design) |
| Compatibility | Compatible with ABB Procontic CS31 PLC / control systems as a slave I/O device |
Note: Public documentation does not always provide full electrical detail (e.g. number of input channels, maximum current/voltage, response time, isolation rating, environmental rating). For engineering or procurement, it is strongly recommended to obtain the original ABB datasheet / nameplate information for precise specs.
Distributed & Modular I/O Architecture — Simplifies Wiring and Installation
Remote I/O units like ICSI08E3 can be placed close to field devices, reducing long wiring runs and lowering installation complexity and cost.
120 VAC Digital Input Compatibility — Easy Integration with AC Switches/Devices
Suitable for typical industrial environments using AC switches, relays, contactors — no need for signal converters or additional relays when integrating existing equipment.
High Scalability & Flexible I/O Configuration
Supports multiple I/O units on the same bus; allows mixing with other types of I/O modules (digital, analog, mixed), making system expansion or reconfiguration straightforward.
Centralized Communication & Management
All remote units communicate through a unified RS-485 bus to the central controller, simplifying system architecture, programming, diagnostics, and maintenance.
Plug-in Design — Easy Maintenance and Expansion
The plug-in module design allows easy module replacement or addition with minimal downtime and without rewiring, beneficial for upgrades or maintenance.
Suitable for Digital Signal Acquisition (ON/OFF, Contact, Status Monitoring)
Ideal for reading switch states, relay contacts, alarm signals, equipment on/off status, safety signals, enabling widespread use in automation, control, monitoring, and interlock applications.
Industrial automation systems — collecting switch, relay, sensor contact, status, alarm signals from machines or equipment
Production lines / manufacturing / assembly / processing plants — monitoring equipment status, limit switches, safety interlocks, control signals
Factories / manufacturing / processing facilities — distributed devices status monitoring and control through central system
Water treatment plants, utility and municipal infrastructure — pump/valve control, equipment status, alarm inputs, remote monitoring
Distributed control systems (large plants with many devices / remote equipment) — using CS31 bus + remote units to centralize I/O while allowing distributed field wiring
System expansion or retrofit projects — adding digital input points or remote I/O functionality without large-scale rewiring
Confirm input signal type and voltage — Ensure that the field device signals (switches, relays, contacts) are compatible with the module’s input specification (e.g. 120 VAC, contact type) before wiring.
Plan bus layout and module addressing carefully — Each remote unit must have a unique address set (rotary switch) to avoid address conflicts on the CS31 bus.
Use appropriate wiring (twisted-pair, shielded if necessary) — For RS-485 communication, use twisted-pair (preferably shielded) cables to ensure signal integrity and reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Power off before install / maintenance / module replacement — Avoid hot-plugging under power to prevent damage or safety hazards.
Observe system capacity limits (number of slave units, bus length, total I/O count) — Although up to 31 slave units are supported, system design must ensure signal integrity, acceptable response times, and stable communication.
Separate wiring / signal types if mixing analog and digital modules — If system includes both analog and digital I/O units, segregate wiring paths to minimize interference and ensure correct operation.
